First Look at the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins: Diesel Off-Roading for $90,000

The high price might leave you speechless but it comes packed with a Cummins H.O. and locking diffs.

First Look at the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins: Diesel Off-Roading for $90,000

Quick Summary

  • Starting Price: The 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins starts at $89,560, a $13,515 increase over the 2026 Hemi version.
  • Off-Road Ready: Comes standard with front and rear e-lockers, Bilstein monotube shocks, and other off-road-worthy parts.
  • Improved Towing and Payload: The Cummins H.O. engine lets the 2027 Power Wagon tow up to 19,630 pounds and carry up to 2,930 pounds of payload.
  • Big Tires: Equipped with 34-inch OD Goodyear all-terrain tires and 20-inch wheels as standard.

It seems like the battle for heavy-duty truck off-road supremacy isn’t dying down anytime soon. Ford has its Tremor series for its Super Duty lineup, Chevrolet still has the ZR2 for its Silverado HD, GMC offers the AT4X, and Ram has the Power Wagon. Until recently, only Ford, Chevrolet, and GMC offered those big off-roaders with a turbo-diesel engine, but now Ram joins the party with the 2027 2500 Power Wagon featuring the Cummins High-Output 6.7-liter turbo-diesel I-6. It also comes riding on 34-inch tires, Bilstein monotube shocks, and other off-road-worthy goodies that will turn this 2500 into a heavy-duty truck ready for nearly any trail, all without ruining its towing capabilities to boot. But the barrier to entry is a starting price at just under $90,000.

Segment Pricing: Steep, but Right on Target for Heavy-Duty Diesels

At $89,560 to start, the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon with its new Cummins H.O. engine sounds steep. Compared to the 2026 model year Hemi version that remains available, it carries a $13,515 premium. But when you look at the offerings from Ford and GM, it’s really not that far out of the norm. The 2026 F-250 XLT with the Tremor Package and Power Stroke H.O. turbo-diesel starts at $76,970 and is the cheapest of the bunch. The Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 with its Duramax has an MSRP of $85,985, and the similarly equipped GMC Sierra HD AT4X is the most expensive at $97,985.

Key Specs: 13.2" Ground Clearance | 3.42:1 Axle Ratio | 42.53:1 Crawl Ratio

With over 1,000 lb-ft of torque on demand, the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins can tow up to 19,630 pounds.

The one feature the 2027 Power Wagon offers that those other three heavy-duty off-road trucks don’t is a standard five-link rear suspension system with coil springs. This gives the Cummins Power Wagon a better ride on-road and better rear articulation for off-roading compared to a rear leaf spring suspension. The rest of the suspension features a set of Bilstein monotube dampers (shocks, if you’re more familiar with that term) and a three-link front suspension with coil springs. And no, the impressive towing capacity of the Power Wagon is not aided by the auto-leveling rear air suspension system available on the Rebel trim and up.

Also exclusive to the Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins is a standard front sway bar disconnect system that maximizes front articulation to further improve off-roading capabilities—a feature similar to the one found on its sister brand, Jeep, and its Wrangler Rubicon models.

AAM Axles, 3.42:1 Gearing, and Crawl Ratio Trade-offs

The axles under the 2027 Power Wagon Cummins, which also help improve its towing capabilities over the Hemi version, are American Axle and Manufacturing (AAM, now known as Dauch Corporation) front and rear live axles. You might be more familiar with calling them “solid axles,” as is common in the enthusiast space.

Both the 9.25-inch front and 11.5-inch rear ring gears are attached to electronic locking differentials with 3.42:1 gearing, which is only available on the Cummins version. For those keeping score, that gives the Cummins a 42.53:1 crawl ratio—the gearing combination of first gear, the transfer case’s low gear, and the axle gear ratios. The Hemi version of the Power Wagon uses 4.10:1 gearing in the same axles, giving it a 50.98:1 crawl ratio. Keep in mind, however, that the Hemi makes its peak torque at 4,000 rpm, whereas the Cummins hits its peak at 1,800 rpm.

Cummins H.O. Performance: Heavy-Duty Grunt Meets Real Tow Capacity

Key Specs: 6.7-liter Turbo-Diesel I-6 | 430 HP | 1,075 lb-ft of Torque

In addition to the standard tow hitch, the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins can be optioned with a fifth-wheel hitch for gooseneck trailers.

That Cummins H.O. engine is an impressive powerhouse to offer the general public. The 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine is tuned to produce 430 horsepower, which sounds tame at first. But then you see the 1,075 lb-ft of torque, and that’s when you realize this engine is no joke. For comparison, the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 from the 2026 Power Wagon produces 405 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, and GM’s 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 produces 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. Only Ford’s 6.7-liter V-8 turbo-diesel engine manages to outperform the Cummins with its 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

Although that makes the 2027 Power Wagon with the Cummins the second-most powerful off-roading heavy-duty truck, it still achieves an impressive 19,630 pounds of towing capacity. That’s 9,040 pounds more than the 2026 Power Wagon Hemi, 1,430 pounds more than the Super Duty Tremor, and 1,130 pounds more than either of GM’s off-roading HDs.

The 2027 Cummins-engined Power Wagon also uses a different transmission and transfer case from the Hemi version. Backing the turbo-diesel engine is the TorqueFlite HD 8SP1075 eight-speed automatic, and a BorgWarner 44-48 two-speed transfer case sends that power to each axle. The gearing inside the trans and t-case, however, remains the same as the Hemi, including the 4.71:1 first gear and the 2.64:1 low-range gear ratio.

Gooseneck Capabilities and Towing Tech Packages

For the first time in the Power Wagon series, a fifth-wheel hitch will be offered as an option for the Cummins-powered variant, further expanding its towing capabilities to heavier gooseneck trailers alongside standard tongue trailers. Other towing options include the Towing Technology Group, which offers an LED third brake light with an integrated cargo-view camera, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, trailer reverse guidance, and a trailer tire pressure monitoring system. Tow Technology Plus adds a digital rearview mirror and trailer reverse steering control functionality.

Wheels, Armor, and Clearance: Built for the Trail

Key Specs: 34-inch OD Goodyear ATs | 20-inch Aluminum Wheels | Mopar Rock Rails

The 34-inch outer diameter tires gives the 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins 13.2 inches of ground clearance.

Another detail that separates the Cummins and Hemi Power Wagons is their all-terrain wheel and tire sizing. The standard Hemi comes with a set of 32-inch outer diameter tires (sized at 285/70R17) on 17x8.0-inch black-painted aluminum wheels, but the Cummins gets a set of 34-inch tires (285/60R20) on 20-inch black and machined-face aluminum alloy wheels. Although the Hemi version offers a beadlock-capable wheel as an option, this isn’t extended to the torquier Cummins at this time. However, this 34-inch tire, along with the suspension, gives the Power Wagon diesel 13.2 inches of ground clearance (about an inch lower than the Hemi version). Its front and rear steel bumpers and standard Mopar Rock Rails provide a 26.1-degree approach, 26-degree departure, and 20.6-degree breakover angle.

Because of this new diesel option, the 2027 Power Wagon Cummins also requires additional underbody protection in the form of a skid plate for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank. This joins the 31-gallon fuel tank and transfer case skid plates already found on the Hemi version. For the overlander crowd, Ram says that 31 gallons of diesel fuel is good for up to 600 miles of range.

The Sport Style Hood is Standard on the Diesel Power Wagon

To further differentiate the Hemi and Cummins versions of the 2500 Power Wagon, the Sport hood is standard alongside the Cummins Turbo-Diesel badging on the front fenders. Beyond that, the standard features found on the Power Wagon remain the same, from its wheel arch extensions to its Power Wagon bedside graphics. It also gets the same options as the Hemi Power Wagon, such as body-color door handles, LED lighting for the bed and cab, RamBox cargo management, and heated trailer-tow mirrors with power folding and extension.

Cab & Comfort: Standard Tech and Upgraded Cowhide

Key Specs: 12-inch Infotainment Screen | Integrated Trailer Brake Controller | Adaptive Cruise

The 2027 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Cummins includes many standard tech features like adaptive cruise control.

Inside, standard features are also identical between the Hemi and Cummins Power Wagons, including the 12-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment screen, integrated trailer brake controller, rear backup camera, front and rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage.

Ram will also offer two equipment groups that add optional interior features. Level 1 adds Bristol leather-trimmed seating, power-adjustable controls, and a 9-speaker Alpine audio system.

Level 2 swaps the Bristol leather for Natura Plus and extends cowhide coverage throughout the cabin. It also adds a 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch passenger display, and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. It brings added functionality to the exterior as well, with a Mopar spray-in bedliner, a deployable bed step, and a selectable Tire Fill Alert that makes airing tires back up easy with audible alerts when you hit your targeted pressure.
