Jeep Cherokee Moving to STLA One Platform and Belvidere Assembly by Late-2029

Only just launched in 2025 on the STLA Large platform, the Cherokee is slated to switch to STLA One before 2030.

Jeep Cherokee Moving to STLA One Platform and Belvidere Assembly by Late-2029

Quick Summary:

  • STLA One: A modular platform that fits multiple vehicle segments beyond the Jeep Cherokee.
  • Cherokee Production Move: Jeep will move Cherokee production to Belvidere, Illinois, alongside the platform change.
  • Belvidere Reopening Delayed: The plant's reopening, originally slated for 2027 under a 2023 agreement, will now be pushed back by a year.
  • Part of FaSTLAne 2030: Stellantis plans to launch 11 new and 12 remodeled vehicles by 2030.

Nearly a full year has passed since the 2026 Jeep Cherokee returned after a three-year absence. The core concept of a compact unibody SUV remains, but its STLA Large platform allowed for flexible, global powertrain options, including all-electric and hybrid versions. However, Jeep already plans to transition the Cherokee to the STLA One platform by late 2029. Jeep will also move U.S. model production from the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico to the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, pushing back Belvidere's original reopening schedule.

Belvidere Assembly Plant Will Reopen Later Than Planned

Key Facts: Original Cherokee production was in Mexico | Belvidere had been idled since 2023

Idled since 2023, Stellantis' Belvidere Assembly will reopen by 2028 in order to begin production of the STLA One platformed Jeep Cherokee.

With the Cherokee moving to the STLA One platform and shifting assembly to Belvidere, Illinois, the plant's 2027 reopening has been delayed by at least a year. The complex has been idled since February 2023, though Stellantis announced plans later that year to reopen it in early 2025 for a new midsize Ram pickup. Since then, midsize Ram truck production moved to the Toledo Complex, with Belvidere slated to build the next-generation Jeep Compass by this December.

However, the Jeep Compass remains in flux for the U.S. market because Stellantis dramatically revised its electric vehicle (EV) and multi-powertrain strategy since 2023. With the Cherokee heading to Belvidere, the assembly plant will not reopen until 2028. The transition brings expanded investment, pushing total funding for the Illinois facility to more than $800 million, $200 million above original targets.

Stellantis will also continue supporting workers awaiting the facility's return. Support includes increased supplemental unemployment benefits (reflecting 2023 contract wage increases), ongoing healthcare coverage, adjusted pension credits to offset delays, and temporary relocation opportunities for Belvidere employees.

When Will the Switch Happen?

Key Facts: Pilot production to start H1 2028 | To-market in H2 2029 | No model year set

Timelines for the Jeep Cherokee's transition to the STLA One platform are not yet finalized. According to Jeep, the current plan calls for a pilot production run in the first half of 2028, followed by full commercial production in the second half of 2029.

What Is STLA One?

Key Facts: STLA One is an advanced modular design | Will support EV, gas, and hybrid powertrains | 70% parts reuse between vehicles

STLA One is a multi-powertrain, modular platform that will first launch in the U.S. with the Jeep Cherokee.

STLA One is a modular chassis platform designed to underpin B-, C-, and D-segment vehicles. These segments define general vehicle sizes. The current Jeep Cherokee occupies the C-segment alongside rivals such as the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Bronco Sport, and it will likely stay there after the transition. Across this broad footprint, Stellantis expects STLA One to reduce development and manufacturing costs through up to 70% component commonality.

STLA One also accommodates multiple powertrain layouts, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, and battery-electric vehicle (BEV) architectures. The BEV setup integrates the battery pack directly into the vehicle structure, similar to the architecture used in the Tesla Model Y. Although Stellantis has dialed back its U.S. EV rollout, a company representative noted that Belvidere will retain the capacity to build all powertrain configurations "to meet evolving market needs."

Additionally, STLA One serves as a software-ready electronics architecture compatible with STLA Brain (Stellantis' scalable electrical architecture and software platform), STLA Smart Cockpit (its digital interface and AI software suite), and steer-by-wire steering systems.

STLA One is central to the broader FaSTLAne 2030 product offensive, serving as a core foundation for 11 all-new and 12 refreshed vehicles launching in North America over the next four years. Stellantis aims to expand its market coverage to 90% and invest more than $13 billion across its domestic manufacturing footprint in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana.
