2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: Redesigned Look, Upgraded Tech, and More Horsepower

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas, VW’s three-row midsize SUV, debuted in the U.S. in April, but we all knew it was only going to be a few months before the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was revealed. Well, it’s finally out of the bag and the two-row variant carries on the idea of Volkswagen’s fun-to-drive character that seats up to five, but is shorter than the 2026 version in both overall length and height. However, it also brings along some new features that were missed in that previous model year.

What’s New for the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Exterior?

Built on the Modularer Querbaukasten, or MQB, Evo platform, the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport is all-new for this second-generation model. Although built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, both Atlas models are based on VW's Teramont Pro sold in China as part of the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture for that market and launched in 2025. The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport is 5.4 inches shorter in overall vehicle length and 2.1 inches lower in overall vehicle height from the 2026 version, which is in part due to dramatically raked C-pillars to give it a more coupe-like appearance.

Save for that, the new Cross Sport shares its overall design with the three-row Atlas, including its all-new front-end design and its double-stacked LED headlights. However, the rocker panels of the Atlas Cross Sport are body color to help separate it from its seven-seater sibling, and the base trim will get silver accents in place of piano black versions when compared to the base-level seven-seater Atlas.

The 2027 will also get three new body color options with Blackberry Metallic, Dark Sage Metallic, and Sandstone, with Blackberry being a new hue for both 2027 Atlas models. The standard Cross Sport will ride on 18-inch aluminum wheels, but all other trims will get all-new 20- and 21-inch wheel options. Those upper-trim variants will also get the option of an illuminated VW badge and door handle puddle lamps. Finally, all models will get a power liftgate as standard equipment on the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, a welcome feature for anyone who struggles to close their gate with handfuls of groceries.

An Improved User Experience Inside

For those looking for the latest driver-assist tech, the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport will not leave you disappointed. IQ.Drive is standard across the board and comes with Travel Assist, VW’s name for its hands-on SAE Level 2 semi-autonomous system. It comes with stop-and-go-capable adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist for up to 95 mph, but it can now perform a driver-initiated lane change and has the ability to drive itself to the side of the road if it senses a medical emergency.

This is all punctuated by a revised 12-way power driver’s seat with 4-way lumbar support. Also standard is a 12.9-inch infotainment screen and a 9-speaker audio system, both of which can be upgraded to a 15-inch infotainment screen and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system on the top-of-the-line Atlas Cross Sport. The driver will also be able to check their speed and other important information with the 10.25-inch digital instrument panel with a configurable gauge cluster that’s standard across all trims.

The center console also has new features for 2027 with a new Driver Experience Dial that controls audio volume, drive modes, and Atmosphere features to help set the mood as you drive. Other new interior features include a dual Qi2 wireless charging pad and 5 USB-C ports for all occupants to charge their devices.

The Same EA888 Engine but Revised for Power and Efficiency

One of the major complaints you would have heard about the 2026 Atlas Cross Sport was its engine. It didn’t feel powerful enough and it wasn’t exactly a fuel miser, either. The old tune of the EA888, the 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 found under the hood, was good for up to 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. For 2027, the EA888 will produce 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Although it hasn’t stated or revealed an estimate on its fuel mileage, VW claims that this new EA888 will provide better fuel economy than it did in 2026 despite its power bump. Back in June, it was revealed that the 7-seater with FWD would return 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined EPA cycle. 4Motion AWD versions would return 20/27/23 mpg and we wouldn’t be surprised to see very similar numbers for the 5-seater. Volkswagen also says that a hybrid powerplant is coming for the Atlas Cross Sport, but only after its planned midcycle refresh.

Driving power to the wheels from the 2.0-liter turbo engine is an eight-speed automatic transmission, but drivers have the option of manually shifting it with VW's Tiptronic feature. This is a traditional auto and not the DCT you’ll find in sporty variants from Volkswagen like the Golf R, Golf GTI, and Jetta GLI. In its standard configuration, power is sent only to the front wheels, but AWD will be available across all trim levels and towing capacity will remain at 5,000 pounds.

No Pricing and Availability Yet

Despite its late launch, Volkswagen didn’t release when to expect the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, nor did it list its pricing. It did say that further details will be announced prior to its launch in early 2027. Knowing that, we say you should expect those details to come out sometime between December 2026 and January 2027. We also expect the price to start in the low $40,000s.
